Meadows Elementary showcases 'discovery and connection' through new McGraw Hill Reveal Math and UDL

Principal Constantino presented a Meadows Elementary spotlight describing the school’s instructional theme of “discovery and connection” and how the new McGraw Hill Reveal Math curriculum is being used alongside Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to promote conceptual understanding in math.

Principal Constantino told the board that the district’s new curriculum emphasizes multiple strategies and real‑world problem solving rather than rote procedure. She described UDL’s three pillars — multiple means of representation (the “what”), multiple means of action and expression (the “how”), and multiple means of engagement (the “why”) — and showed examples of manipulatives, visual models and digital tools teachers use to give students alternate ways to access and demonstrate learning.

Third‑grade teachers Myra Cody and Miss Olvingrin walked trustees through classroom routines that begin with curiosity prompts, guided whole‑group practice and independent work; Olvingrin highlighted the value of pre‑ and post‑unit assessments, daily lesson checks and paired Form A/Form B unit tests for retesting and differentiation. A fourth‑grade teacher and tech lead, Rebecca Schlemmer, and other presenters noted that the curriculum’s digital tools provide additional alternatives to pencil‑and‑paper tasks.

Students Hannah Young and Connor described how discussing math with classmates and drawing visual representations helped them see different approaches to problems.

Trustees praised the presentation and the teachers’ collaborative work. Board members said the spotlight remains a highlight of meetings and commended parents and staff for supporting student learning.

No formal board action was taken on the presentation; the board recessed for approximately 10 minutes after the spotlight.
