Broadwater County solid waste staff report improved public response to collection outreach; about $4,500 collected so far

Broadwater County solid waste staff reported the current round of outreach generated substantially more positive public feedback than an earlier mailing. Misty (staff) said letters were sent around Sept. 17 and that returns through local collection activities had reached about $4,500 so far; staff said they expect additional payments from two businesses that indicated they will remit larger checks.
Board members discussed how many accounts remain unpaid. Staff estimated the original list was around 251 accounts and that current unpaid accounts were "just under 100". The board noted some properties were erroneously assessed (examples cited on Missouri Road Green and other addresses) and said staff have corrected those where identified.
Board members discussed enforcement options mentioned previously, including filing liens or publishing names, and noted legal or policy limits on adding amounts directly to next year's assessment. "We have this governing body that's over us that said no," a board member said in reference to adding unpaid amounts to the following year. Staff said liens are legally possible but may be a poor community outcome, and the board discussed public-notice options such as running a list in the newspaper or other public-service announcements.
Misty and other staff said the county will continue collection through Dec. 31 and that final accounting will determine how much of the unpaid balance can realistically be recovered.
