School committee authorizes delegate to MASC meeting, directs votes on BMI testing and financial literacy

The Stoughton School Committee on Nov. 4 authorized Jillian DeStefano to serve as the district’s delegate at the Massachusetts School Committee Association delegate convening on Nov. 14 and gave her guidance on how to vote on key resolutions.

After discussion, committee members told DeStefano to support a resolution to remove BMI screening/testing from school practice, citing concerns about past parent reaction and school role in medical screening. Members were split and cautioned about a proposed resolution to add personal financial literacy as a state graduation mandate; several members expressed that while financial literacy is valuable, making it a statewide unfunded mandate raises implementation concerns. The committee indicated its preference that DeStefano vote against a standalone financial‑literacy mandate but to support the other resolutions as presented unless developments at the convening warranted a different response.

The committee also discussed a proposed regional school assessment reserve fund resolution that would permit municipalities to establish a reserve for regional school assessments; members noted it is optional for towns and would require local action (town meeting) if enacted at the state level. Committee members agreed to give DeStefano discretion to respond to floor actions and amendments consistent with the committee’s earlier discussion.

The motion to authorize DeStefano, amended to reflect the committee’s verbal guidance, passed in a roll call vote, 5–0.
