Board approves Barracuda support renewal and server replacement budgeted in CIP

The Water Resources Board approved renewal of annual support for the Barracuda backup system and reiterated approval to proceed with replacement of aging production and disaster-recovery servers.
Staff said the Barracuda platform provides both on-site and cloud backup for more than 40 terabytes of data across 55 physical and virtual servers. The annual support cost was described as expensive (staff cited a figure near $50,000) but necessary to protect the utility from data loss after prior cyber incidents that included a defacement of the online payments home page.
Separately, staff explained a planned server replacement to replace six-year-old servers used for production and disaster recovery. The servers’ lifecycle and recent vendor support changes (noting Broadcom’s acquisition of certain support assets) and rising costs led staff to request replacement. Staff said $750,000 was budgeted for the project and described the expected life of the new servers at about six years.
Board members approved both the Barracuda support renewal and proceeding with the server replacement work by voice votes. Staff noted they will monitor capacity growth and ensure adequate backup sizing going forward.
