Commission names grant manager to county opioid committee, authorizes participation in revised Purdue settlement

Penobscot County commissioners on Aug. 6 approved appointing the county grant manager (Wendy) to serve as the county's voting member on the local opioid recovery committee in place of the county administrator. Commissioners also authorized the administrator to sign documentation to participate in the revised Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement.
Administrator and commissioners discussed the committee's prior informal meeting cadence and agreed future meetings should be posted and minutes prepared for transparency. Commissioners emphasized that the county — not the advisory committee — will set final priorities for how county‑allocated opioid settlement funds are distributed and asked the committee to develop application and allocation parameters for the commission to approve.
The commission declined to commit an allocation amount at the Aug. 6 meeting, citing uncertainty about final settlement distribution figures and asking the administrator and committee to bring recommended parameters and estimated county shares to the Aug. 27 workshop. Commissioners discussed collaborating with municipalities such as Bangor and others that have or may receive settlement funds so that efforts are coordinated where appropriate.
The appointment of the grant manager to the opioid committee passed unanimously; authorization to sign participation paperwork for the revised Purdue settlement was also approved.
