Commission approves higher pay scale to speed hiring for county pretrial program

Penobscot County commissioners on Aug. 6 approved an updated pay scale for newly created pretrial services positions so the sheriff's office can hire experienced staff more quickly.
HR and sheriff's office leaders told commissioners that early applicant interviews produced several well‑qualified candidates and that the original conservative wage scale risked losing those candidates to other employers. The revised pay scale increases the coordinator and specialist ranges while preserving step differentials and nonunion status for the positions.
Commissioners approved the updated scale for immediate posting and expedited hiring. County staff said the new hires would be nonunion positions and would be monitored internally to determine whether future inclusion in bargaining units is appropriate. The board noted the plan fits within the department's current budget assumptions and asked HR to report back on hires and budget impact.
