Proposal to rename Legacy Park to Brush Arbor Grove Dog Park advances to council

Parks staff described a proposal to rename Legacy Park in the Arts District to Brush Arbor Grove Dog Park and to convert the small pocket park into separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, add water access and update lighting.
Staff explained the name references a historical meeting site where Boston Avenue United Methodist initially met in a temporary brush arbor shelter in the late 1890s. Staff said the existing weathered-steel archway art will remain and that the Arts District owners association will fund roughly 10% of the project costs for additional arts initiatives and upgrades. Staff told the committee the current LED lights in the park are beyond repair and that new lighting is part of the scope.
Staff said converting small, underused pocket parks into dog parks can reduce dumping and make the space more usable for downtown residents, noting nearby housing growth and demand for dog amenities. The committee set the item for council consideration on Oct. 15.
