Committee moves appointments of Jamila Stuckey and Chris Chavez to city commissions

The Tulsa Public Works Committee heard presentations for two commission appointments and indicated both nominations would move forward to the City Council.

Jamila Stuckey, nominated to the (transcript) "bridal welfare commission" to replace Robin Ballenger with a term expiring Sept. 24, 2028, told the committee she has lived in Tulsa about seven years and described work with Opportunity Project, TNTP (a remote education nonprofit), the African American Leadership Academy and United Way. She said, "I am originally from Los Angeles, California. I've been in Tulsa for about 7 years. I started my journey with Opportunity Project doing social and emotional learning. And then I I transitioned to, TNTP... I do work with the United Way." Committee members welcomed Stuckey and noted a liaison from the Animal Welfare working group would coordinate on policy recommendations.

Chris Chavez, presented for reappointment to the Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic Latinx Affairs Commission with a term expiring Dec. 31, 2027, described his background including military service and education. He said, "I've been in Tulsa 2 times now. First time was in 1998 and then came back in 02/2007... I joined the army at 17, spent 23 years serving as a military police in field artillery." Committee members thanked Chavez for his service and for his willingness to continue serving on the commission.

Both nominations were discussed briefly and scheduled to appear on the Oct. 15 City Council agenda for formal consideration.
