Public Works: Road & Bridge seeks materials and capital funding; buildings team flags mold, elevator and roof repairs

Public Works and Building Maintenance staff presented budget requests covering Road & Bridge operations, vector control and building maintenance. They told commissioners increased material prices and vehicle repairs have strained existing budgets and requested capital outlays to replace end-of-life equipment.

For Road & Bridge, staff sought modest increases in overtime and office-cell-service budgets, a higher materials allocation to cover aggregate/rock purchases, and a request that commissioners consider capital funding for tandem dump trucks, a crack sealer, a backhoe/brush grabber and other heavy-equipment replacements. Presenters noted they procure large quantities of rock and road materials up front, and that a shift in market prices has driven up the cost of a ton of aggregate.

Vector control asked for replacement tablets (field devices) and environmental enforcement officers asked for body cameras and vests; environmental enforcement staff said bodycams that upload to the county or sheriff cloud would reduce the need for costly local docking stations and simplify evidence handling.

Buildings and facilities staff outlined recurring maintenance and a set of capital needs. They identified priority roof and parking-lot repairs at the McKenzie Annex, Bollweevil/Armory building and precinct yards; they also described mold remediation needs in the courthouse and jail, and reported that one of the courthouse elevators needs a piston replacement after prior seal repairs. Presenters warned elevator repairs are complicated and expensive because different elevators in county buildings are not the same model, complicating spare-part strategies.

No vote was taken; staff provided a prioritization list and said they will submit detailed cost estimates and a capital-priority spreadsheet for commissioner review.
