Stephenson County committee approves salary increases for state's attorney and public defender

The committee approved a resolution increasing the state's attorney’s annual salary by $12,609.67 effective July 1, 2025. The resolution, as read into the record, cited state law (55 ILCS 5‑4‑2001) and said Illinois will reimburse the county 100% of any increase occurring after Dec. 31, 1988 per the cited statute. A voice vote carried with no opposition recorded; the motion was made by Mr. McKenna and seconded by committee members on the record.
The committee also approved a resolution raising the public defender’s annual salary by $11,348.70 effective July 1, 2025. The resolution cited the statutory minimum relationship between the public defender’s and state's attorney’s salaries and referenced 55 ILCS 5‑3‑4007. The resolution instructed the treasurer to apply to the state monthly for reimbursement of two‑thirds (66 2/3%) of the increase. The motion to approve was made by Mr. McKenna and seconded by Miss Williams; a voice vote passed with no opposition recorded.
Both resolutions were recorded as adopted during the July 9 meeting. No amendments were offered during the committee discussion.
