Pasco high school tutors honored as New World Scholars for literacy support

The Pasco County School Board recognized a cohort of high school students designated as New World Scholars for serving as trained tutors in elementary classrooms through the Just Read Florida program.
Heather Rulison, program coordinator for advanced and enriched programs, described the district partnership with the state tutoring initiative: juniors and seniors work in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms to deliver Tier 2 reading interventions while earning high school credits and pay. Rulison said 24 elementary schools hosted tutors this year and that students who earn the New World Scholar designation must complete a minimum of 75 tutoring hours, with many tutors completing more than 200 hours.
Rulison shared several tutor and teacher comments about gains in student confidence and reading ability and read aloud the list of participating tutors and their assigned elementary schools. The board gave the tutors and their families an ovation; no board action was required.
