The Indian Prairie CUSD 204 Board of Education voted July 7 to appoint Michelle Shawbaker as the district's director of student services and to approve multiple consent agenda items, while pulling one policy for later consideration.
Superintendent Dr. Talley recommended the appointment, saying Shawbaker is joining the district from Ridge Family Center for Learning in Elk Grove Village, where she served as principal, and previously worked as an assistant principal and a director for early childhood. Talley said Shawbaker is a parent in the district with two sons who graduated from Neuqua Valley.
Dr. Talley asked the board to approve Shawbaker's appointment; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. The roll call recorded all voting members in favor.
The board also approved several blocks of the consent agenda. Members discussed and approved school improvement plans for Brookdale and Longwood, which Talley described as "targeted schools" that receive additional state funding and are subject to a three-year improvement requirement. Talley and board members emphasized that targeted status reflects state and federal requirements and additional resources, not a districtwide disparity of services.
Board members debated and ultimately approved a revision to the district's student assignment and interdistrict transfer policy (consent item L). The administration told the board the change aligns written policy with current practice by clarifying where families should submit transfer requests and by combining elementary and high-school language into a single K'12 policy.
When the board considered a package of policy updates (item Q), Trustee comments led to an amendment: the board approved item Q except for board policy 7:250 (student support services), which was pulled for further discussion and review at a later meeting. A board member specifically asked to delay approval of policy 7:250 in order to review notification and parental communication provisions.
Other agenda items approved included routine consent items and reports; the board was also asked to approve Mark Rising's application to be considered for a state officer position with the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) and to support him if elected. The board approved that request by roll call.
The board's consent materials also included the newly approved board goals and a giving report documenting community contributions; the superintendent highlighted ongoing construction funded through the Safer, Stronger 02/2004 bond and $40,000,000 in work happening over the summer.
