At the Feb. 25 meeting a commissioner raised concerns that a donation from an advisory-board member's business could be viewed as potential self-dealing or create the appearance of undue influence for advisory boards that provide recommendations to county staff and the commission. The commissioner said advisory committee members should donate time rather than money to avoid any perception of private benefit tied to public service.
Supporters of accepting the donation described it as charitable sponsorship that offsets event costs and recorded that the donor requested to underwrite the ceremony so it would not be a county-funded event.
After discussion the board approved acceptance of the donation. The donor spoke briefly at the meeting in support of the program and said staff, rather than the donor, manage the event logistics.
The item was presented as a pulled consent item and the board recorded a vote in open session. Staff indicated the event is a county-recognized awards ceremony and that donated funds will be used under staff discretion to support the program.
No formal county policy change was adopted; commissioners asked county staff and counsel to review guidelines for advisory-board sponsorships outside of the meeting.
