Hermosa Beach preschool expands to three classrooms as demand grows

Hermosa Beach City School District officials reported Jan. 8 that the preschool program has grown from a single classroom (18 students) at its August 2023 launch to three classrooms as demand increased.
Preschool coordinator Hannah Ford said the expansion addressed family interest while keeping small class sizes. The program’s curriculum emphasizes play‑based, hands‑on learning — “children learn best through exploration and interaction,” she said — and targets early literacy, math foundations, science exploration, creative arts, music, movement and social‑emotional learning intended to support transition to transitional kindergarten.
Staff also expanded the Dolphin Cove outdoor play area to accommodate more children. Board members praised the program’s rapid growth and the staff’s work to maintain quality as enrollment increased. Ford said a high percentage of preschool students subsequently moved into the district’s TK program, though she did not provide an exact percentage.
