Hoops Park courts redone, Goose Creek rain gardens complete; parks staff announce August grand opening

John Renzo of Pannoni and Keith Kurowski, director of Parks & Recreation, reported completion of two capital projects: the Hoops Park court resurfacing and conversion (tennis to pickleball) and the Goose Creek green infrastructure project. Renzo said the Goose Creek project included rain gardens and parking lot resurfacing at the Public Works site and is 100% complete; grant closeout is underway.
Kurowski said the Hoops Park work was largely funded by grants and included high‑performance surfacing, conversion of a tennis court to two pickleball courts, new nets/posts and ADA accessibility improvements such as a new walking path, gate and parking. “We will have a grand opening of the... Hoops Park Tennis Courts on August 1,” Kurowski said; council members and grantors will be invited.
Kurowski also discussed event programming and mitigation steps for pickleball noise, noting the department will consider sound‑attenuation materials on fencing. He reported multiple grant applications in process, including a $250,000 request to DCD (for a $300,000 project) and a $30,000 request to the People, Parks and Community Foundation for a $115,000 water‑play improvement. Staff said final grant decisions and steering‑committee review of a parks plan are pending.
