Commission adds burdock, cockleburs and curly dock to county noxious-weed list

Iron County Extension and weed-control staff on Jan. 13 asked the commission to add three species to the county noxious-weed list: burdock, cockleburs and curly dock. The commission approved the additions after staff described increasing infestations, impacts on forage and livestock and the difficulty of control when the plants seed and spread via hay and water-flow channels.
Amber (county weed supervisor) and Extension staff showed photographs and described problems along canals, flood channels and in fields where the late-emerging broadleaf weeds appear after standard pre-emergent treatments. Extension staff cautioned that the plant seeds can be toxic to livestock in quantities and that heavy infestations are increasingly reported across parts of the county. The county will add the species to the local list to enable coordinated control assistance and to support outreach to landowners.
Staff noted that landowners remain responsible for controlling listed weeds on their property but said the county's program can assist with treatment under existing cost-share and service arrangements.
