Principals outline 2025–26 campus improvement priorities; board approves plans

Four campus leaders presented highlights from their 2025–26 campus improvement plans and the board approved the plans during the Sept. 22 meeting.
Alma Velez, principal of Anson Jones Elementary, said her campus is focusing on closing achievement gaps in reading and math and on TELPAS (English‑language proficiency) for emergent bilingual students; strategies include school‑wide AVID implementation, academic vocabulary focus, use of Summit K‑12 for language development, and culture-building through house systems and Capturing Kids’ Hearts practices.
Jane Long Intermediate’s principal described an emphasis on AVID strategies, planners, individualized progress monitoring and a bilingual instructional coach to support high EL populations. SFA Middle’s leadership outlined efforts to strengthen planning, increase AVID-aligned instruction, and provide a full‑time bilingual coach to support English learners across content areas.
Bryan High School’s principal described a new dean of instruction role to support core-area planning, expanded credit-recovery options (including night school), attendance incentives tied to credit restoration, and earlier TSI testing for juniors to improve college- and career-readiness rates.
Board members asked for periodic updates during the year on implementation progress and outcomes; the board approved the campus improvement plans and authorized administration to make adjustments as needed to meet student needs.
