The Brownsville mayor and board on Aug. 12 granted a jurisdictional exception to permit Haywood County ambulances to transport inmates from the county jail to medical facilities within the city.
A sheriff’s representative told the board the county requested the exception to reduce costs associated with jail medical transports and because the county’s ambulances already handle a small number of jail calls — “only maybe 8 or 9 last year,” the speaker said. Staff and board members discussed the additional security requirements when transporting inmates by ambulance.
Supporters framed the exception as a cost‑saving intergovernmental cooperation measure; the board moved, seconded and approved the request. The action authorizes county EMS to operate within city limits for inmate transports under agreed procedures and does not change the city’s ambulance service coverage for other 911 calls.
