The Brownsville mayor and board on Aug. 12 approved the first reading of Ordinance 1042, which loosens certain zoning rules on permitted exterior building materials in areas with existing vinyl siding and allows broader use of cement fiberboard.
Mr. Merrick, who presented the item, said the change aligns zoning text with a 2022 local design‑review guideline and reduces the current requirement for stone coverage from 100% of each wall to 25% on specified walls. He described the change as intended to make projects more contractor‑friendly while preserving design review standards.
Planning staff noted the planning commission provided a favorable review. The board moved, seconded and approved the ordinance on first reading; the item will return for subsequent readings under the city’s ordinance process.
