Administration presented the board with highlighted changes and page references in the board packet, noting three items of particular local importance: required student IDs, revised rules for personal communication devices, and disciplinary changes tied to nicotine/vape possession and teacher removal authority. The presentation said campuses will use a progression of consequences (detention and dress‑code consequences) and that principals may approve alternate plans that reduce placement days for students when appropriate.
On personal devices the administration described the local approach as a blend of prohibition and supervised use: phones are to be off and kept in backpacks during class; if a student leaves the classroom with a phone, the device must be stored in a pocket chart rather than carried loose. Administration said teachers previously had classroom‑level discretion; the updated code formalizes and tightens the expectation.
On nicotine and vaping, state law changed from mandatory disciplinary alternative‑placement (DAP) to discretionary placement; Sharyland ISD will retain DAP placement locally as a disciplinary option and outlined a progression of consequences in the code. The code also adds a campus behavior coordinator role and reaffirms threat‑assessment team processes.
The code updates change the teacher removal policy from requiring multiple incidents to permitting removal after a single incident in certain circumstances. In‑school suspension (ISS) maximum days were altered in state guidance; the administration advised the board that the district will follow the new rules with a 10‑day administrator review for ISS placements.
The board approved the code by voice vote, 7–0.
