County backs SkyWest as essential air service provider at Falls International

The Koochiching County Board on Aug. 12 approved a letter of support to the U.S. Department of Transportation endorsing the Falls International Airport Commission's recommendation to designate SkyWest Airlines as the essential air service (EAS) provider for Falls International Airport in International Falls, Minn.

Commissioners said the airport's Friday and Saturday flights are routinely full and that the other bid option would have split service with Brainerd and reduced seat availability out of International Falls. "SkyWest was by far the best choice on that matter," a commissioner said during the discussion, noting SkyWest’s aircraft offered more comfortable seating and a schedule the commission considered preferable despite not being the low bid.

Why it matters: The EAS designation determines federal subsidy and contract awards that preserve commercial air service for smaller and rural communities. The airport commission requested written local support to explain why the county supports the airport commission’s recommendation even though SkyWest’s bid was not the lowest.

Board action: The board read and approved the letter by voice vote and directed staff to forward it to the Department of Transportation.
