Council authorizes auction of surplus vehicles; two electric buses due in April

The council approved staff recommendation to dispose of surplus city vehicles and equipment using a long‑standing auctioneer service. Director of Community Services explained that items were being retired because of age, repair costs or nonoperational status.
Staff told the council that two electric buses are scheduled to arrive in April and a third electric vehicle will replace a Bluebird bus that was damaged in a fire. The city has installed infrastructure at its facilities to support vehicle charging and reported grant awards that will supply nine additional electric vehicles in the near term. Proceeds from the surplus auction will pay auctioneer fees and offset replacement costs.
Council members asked staff to coordinate fleet planning for upcoming needs tied to the 2028 Olympics and to preserve or replace larger passenger buses if necessary for dignitary or event transport. Staff said the currently ordered buses are medium‑duty electric buses (roughly 35 passengers) and that larger Prevost‑type coaches take longer lead times to procure.
The council vote carried (recorded in the minutes) and staff will proceed with auction consignment and replacement procurement.
