Macomb County honors Richmond Lenox EMS and commends officers for pond rescue

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 20 adopted proclamations recognizing Richmond Lenox Emergency Medical Service for its 50th anniversary and commended officers for a December rescue of a driver whose vehicle sank in a pond.
The board, meeting in the county chambers, adopted the set of proclamations by unanimous voice vote. Commissioner Phil Craft presented the Richmond Lenox EMS recognition and described the agency’s 50 years of emergency response and community transport services. “I want to congratulate the Richmond Lenox EMS on their fiftieth anniversary,” Craft said, noting the agency’s work transporting seniors and patients to appointments and its partnership with SMART transit.
Commissioner Ken Goike joined in presenting the proclamation and praised the agency’s leadership, singling out Jeff Waite for long-term service. “They are a wonderful asset to Macomb County,” Goike said.
During the presentation, Sgt. Bates of Clinton Township’s Platoon C recounted the Dec. 30 incident when officers responded to a vehicle in a pond near the Harbor’s apartment complex. Sgt. Bates described how officers removed their gear, waded into the water and pulled the driver from the partially submerged vehicle before it sank. “We pretty quickly determined that the vehicle was sinking,” Sgt. Bates said. He told the board that officers used lifelines and life jackets to get the driver and the rescuers safely back to shore.
Jeff Waite, who the board identified as Richmond Lenox EMS’s longtime leader, thanked the board for the recognition and acknowledged Richmond Township Supervisor Cindy Grenia for her support of the operation.
The proclamations package also included recognitions for other local honorees; the board voted to adopt all items in the proclamations block without additional discussion.
The board’s action was procedural: motion to adopt proclamations 8a–8d was called during the meeting and the motion passed 13 to 0.
