The Taft Planning Commission on Nov. 25 recommended that the City Council adopt the 2025 California Building Standards Code (Title 24) and incorporate the 2025 CAL FIRE fire hazard severity maps by reference.
Staff explained the statewide code is updated every three years and that local adoption by reference ensures the city enforces current statewide building, residential, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, energy, green‑building and fire standards. The planning director said staff compared the state updates with Taft’s municipal code and found no additional local amendments were required; the adoption retains existing findings for climactic, geological and topographical conditions where justified.
The commission opened a public hearing and, receiving no public testimony, moved to forward the recommendation to council. The motion passed on a 4‑0 vote with one commissioner absent. Staff emphasized the adoption aligns local rules with state standards, including the new Wildland‑Urban Interface provisions and updated wildfire hazard maps.
The item will be forwarded to the City Council for final adoption.
