The sheriff said the department conducted interviews for a jail navigator position (13 applications, 10 interviews) and made a tentative offer pending background checks; the jail navigator will evaluate new detainees for substance-use and re-entry needs, connect them to treatment and community resources (birth certificates, IDs, GED assistance, eyeglasses), and help reduce recidivism. The sheriff said the navigator also benefits the judicial process by allowing in-jail evaluations.
The department also conducted interviews for detention officers and made tentative offers pending background checks; some positions remain open, and the sheriff said hiring will continue through the end of the month. Staff noted plans for facility improvements including window replacements and flooring rehabilitation.
The commission thanked staff and asked that updates on hiring and jail repairs be returned as work progresses.
