County highway administrator Jason Harris told the commission the county currently has a 1,000-gallon diesel tank and a 500-gallon gasoline tank at the shed and is examining whether moving to a larger bulk tank (for example, 10,000 gallons) would reduce frequent deliveries and lower delivery charges.
Harris said a larger tank would allow tanker deliveries less often (for example, every eight weeks instead of weekly), but such a change would require a containment dike sized to the largest tank, water-oil separation for stormwater runoff, and construction costs for the tank pad and containment. Staff noted tanker capacity and operational logistics (typical delivery truck capacities are about 8,000 gallons) and observed that propane tanks must only be filled to 80% capacity, which affects planning.
Commissioners asked staff to study the cost of constructing a larger tank, compare delivery charges and projected return on investment, and examine storage/containment requirements and permitting. No formal motion was made; staff will return with cost estimates and a construction plan for commission consideration.
