The Parks and Recreation Commission honored Eagle Scout Luke Williams on Wednesday for an Eagle Scout service project that renovated three bike tire‑cleaning stations at Waterdog Park.
"My name is Luke Williams, and I am a senior at Sequoia High School," Williams said during the commission meeting. "For my Eagle Scout project, I renovated the bike tire cleaning stations at Waterdog Park. I chose this project because I love to mountain bike and Waterdog is one of my favorite places to ride." He told the commission he sprayed frames, replaced bristle brushes and reused the existing locations and frames rather than relocating the stations.
Williams said the cleaning stations do more than help bikes: by removing mud and seeds from tires they help prevent the spread of a pathogen the presenter identified as sudden oak death, which damages bay‑area open spaces. Commissioners thanked Williams and posed questions about materials and whether similar stations exist elsewhere; Williams said he used new bristles and did not relocate the stations.
Commissioners presented a commendation and photos; staff said the Parks sign shop printed a sign designed by Williams to explain the stations' purpose and help educate riders.
