The Benton Harbor Legislative Committee recommended that the full Benton Harbor City Commission consider designating the Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary to clean and monitor conditions along the Tijuana Marie Floyd Memorial Bridge.
City staff reported that the Rotary had taken up the project and members were observed cleaning the bridge that day. The city manager said the volunteers had collected “several bags” of trash and that the city would ensure trash was removed even if collection occurred the following day: “I've seen them today. It was several bags. So I hope that the trash that's being left is getting picked up. You know, if it's not the same day, it'll be the next day.”
A commissioner asked whether staff could reach out to other volunteer groups to maintain nearby improvement projects, noting it was disheartening when renovation work was not maintained. Committee members agreed the volunteer effort was helpful and moved the Rotary designation to the main commission meeting for final action.
The committee took no final action on the designation; the full commission will consider the designation on the forthcoming Monday agenda.
