TLETA staff said the facility has managed 140-cadet cohorts in recent cycles and that actual attendance typically declines between orientation and the end of the first week because of attrition. The director said the current class started with roughly 140 and had about 110 remaining at the time of the meeting; attrition rates of 13% to 25% between orientation and the end of week one were described as typical. Commissioners discussed limits on academy resources such as firearms points, driving lanes and gym capacity and praised planning for the new facility, which will add bed capacity for basic training.
A motion to approve the waiver passed by voice vote. Commissioners urged sheriffs and chiefs not to push candidates into a basic class prematurely and discussed strengthening alternative training paths, transition schools and local remediation to limit academy attrition.
