Lancaster ISD proposes new CTE courses including Cisco internetworking and cosmetology electives

At the Feb. 12 work session Lancaster ISD staff presented a slate of proposed innovative CTE courses to the board that would require local board approval before being offered. The proposal includes a Practicum in Digital Audio Technology, Internetworking Technologies 1 and 2 aligned to the district's existing Cisco lab, nail care and aesthetics electives that would allow students to earn industry-based certifications without completing full cosmetology programs, and sports medicine courses to be taught by athletic trainers in partnership with athletics.
Miss Murray said the Cisco internetworking courses build on hardware already installed at the high school and function as the district's cybersecurity lab. Vice President Smith asked whether the district provides vouchers and exam-preparation materials for Cisco certification exams; Murray replied, "Yes. We cover all exam expenses for students," and said the district covers exam prep materials as well.
Trustees noted opportunities to connect students with industry internship pathways; Trustee Nicholson offered to provide a contact at Citibank to expand placement opportunities. Murray said the courses would take effect in the 2025'26 school year pending board approval at a regular meeting.
There was no final vote on course adoption at the Feb. 12 work session; staff said they will place the adoption requests on the regular board meeting agenda for action.
