Lancaster ISD awarded $299,717 from FCC cybersecurity pilot for schools and libraries

The Federal Communications Commission awarded Lancaster ISD $299,717 through its three-year Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program to fund software and services to protect district networks against ransomware and other cyber threats, staff said.
Lancaster ISD staff announced Feb. 12 that the district received $299,717 through the FCC's three-year, $200 million Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program. The award will fund cybersecurity services and equipment to strengthen district broadband networks and defenses against ransomware and other attacks.
"This program will allow the FCC to obtain actionable data about which cybersecurity services and equipment would best help K-12 schools and libraries address the growing cyber threats and attacks against their broadband networks," Angie Knight said when presenting the award. She told trustees the program's goal is to learn how to improve school and library defenses and that Lancaster ISD was awarded $299,717.
Trustees asked whether the funding would support student training or certifications; staff clarified the grant will pay for network protections and not student certification programs.
Knight said she would answer additional questions from trustees and thanked colleagues for work on the application. There was no board vote on the award at the Feb. 12 work session; it was presented as information.
