Board orders contract review after extended debate over curriculum consultant and VEX program spending

Board members engaged in a prolonged discussion about a multi-year consultant arrangement for STEM/innovation programming (the VEX robotics and related services contract attributed in the meeting to Jason McKenna). Several trustees criticized the contract—s size and term and asked for evidence that agreed benchmarks and deliverables have been met. One trustee said she had voted against renewing the contract and asked for clearer quarterly scorecards; others said the documentation they had seen indicated the contract—s stated tasks (professional development, teacher support, implementation of extracurricular teams) had been performed.

Trustees described a gap between expected measurable outcomes (for example, increases in specific student achievement measures or grant award totals) and the contract—s deliverables; they requested consolidated evidence showing benchmarks and impact. Multiple trustees recommended the district develop a stronger evaluation mechanism for contractors (quarterly scorecards, measurable benchmarks) and avoid automatic renewals without documented outcomes. A board majority asked Dr. Wilson to provide all Jason McKenna contract documents and supporting evidence to his supervisor and the district solicitor to determine whether contractual benchmarks are being met and whether modification or nonrenewal is appropriate. "My action step from here is to send all of the Jason McKenna contracts to my supervisor and the solicitor, and then ask for what additional materials are being requested based on the contract and what's outlined in the contract," Dr. Wilson said.

No immediate termination or modification of the contract occurred at the meeting. Trustees agreed to review materials, consider a public briefing of benchmarks and revisit the contract well before the end-date that was referenced in the contract extension.
