LaPorte County SWCD approves consent items; staff reports progress on bioretention, native seeding and outreach

The LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District board met Oct. 7 and approved routine consent items — the prior meeting minutes, the treasurer’s report and claims — by voice vote before hearing staff reports on active projects and outreach.

District staff highlighted several on-the-ground efforts. A bioretention facility installed west of Ziegler Road under a National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) technical-assistance grant is intended to capture and infiltrate runoff from the fairgrounds, including animal-related flows during fair week. Staff said the design uses dry wells, bioengineering and native plantings (including little bluestem) to increase infiltration and provide water-quality benefits. Staff clarified this project is funded through the NACD grant, not the Clean Water Indiana (CWI) grant.

Staff also recapped a large volunteer planting at the PAC center. The board heard that about 50 volunteers helped plant roughly 600 plugs in roughly two to three hours; staff said the work produced substantial in-kind match for grant reporting and recommended coauthoring a press release to highlight the district’s role and the CWI grant connection. The board discussed producing signage and outreach materials that staff (identified as Destiny) created for a set of nine projects.

On the Habitat and Grassland Assistance Program (HGAP) project staff reported a contractor has successfully terminated turf on an approximately seven-acre site and is moving to dormant seeding. The district also plans additional education and interpretation for project sites, including a museum display developed with a local artist.

Other items raised in the staff reports included River Days programming (seven days of events with teacher feedback), renewed engagement with the Trail Creek Watershed Partnership, nomination of Mark Parkman as the district’s River Friendly Farmer of the Year and a note that Master Gardeners volunteer Teresa has free oak seedlings available for local projects.
