Wayne County commissioners approved a $250,000 contribution to Life Remodeled to rehabilitate the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system at Anchor Detroit, the repurposed former Dominican High School.
Anthony Cartwright, director of economic development, introduced the item and said Life Remodeledhas repurposed schools into opportunity hubs that house multiple nonprofit tenants providing services to families. Life Remodeled representatives on the line described the Durfee Innovation Society project and Anchor Detroit as opportunity hubs that, when fully activated, are expected to serve thousands annually. The full Anchor Detroit project was described as a roughly $14,000,000 effort; the county contribution is intended to cover HVAC rehabilitation to make the building usable year-round.
Commissioners asked why the selected HVAC contractor was based in Port Huron rather than a local vendor; staff said the work resulted from a competitive bid process and that the selected contractor was the lowest qualified bidder. Commissioners also requested a breakdown of the other funding sources supporting the larger $14,000,000 project; staff indicated a budget breakdown and sources would be provided at the next meeting.
The motion to approve was moved by Anthony Cartwright (motion recorded in the transcript) and was carried by the commission by voice/tablet vote.
