Barnstable County commissioners voted Nov. 5 to approve the county's 2026 legal holiday schedule and a proposed 2025–26 end-of-year work schedule. The schedule retains customary legal holidays, treats the Friday after Thanksgiving as a 'skeleton day' (employees who work may take a compensatory day off prior to the following Jan. 31) and proposes a noon closure on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve. Because Dec. 25, 2025 falls on a Thursday, the following Friday is proposed as a floating holiday for employees who work that day.
Staff noted an operational recommendation to cancel the Dec. 31 meeting because the board is tentatively scheduled to meet again on Jan. 2. The motion to approve the holiday and work-schedule items was moved, seconded and passed by voice vote (all in favor).
The board instructed staff to circulate the approved schedule and to coordinate any necessary coverage or signatures on routine items during the calendar transition.
