Hickory honors streets crew leader McKinley Sherrill with APWA Streets Achievement Award

The City of Hickory presented Streets Division crew leader McKinley "Mac" Sherrill with the North Carolina American Public Works Association (APWA) Streets Achievement Award during the council meeting on Nov. 4.
City Engineer Carolina Cone, who introduced the award, recounted Sherrill—s tenure with the city since February 1994 and his long record of emergency response and after-hours service. Cone said Sherrill "takes advantage of any training opportunities available," handles night calls and emergencies, and was essential in response work after the 2019 tornado when he "worked over 80 hours a week for 4 weeks straight to get the roads back open." Cone added that "he demonstrates a positive attitude and quietly goes above and beyond the call of duty without a complaint."
Mayor Giss and other council members publicly thanked Sherrill for his years of service and presented a photo opportunity. The meeting record shows ceremonial recognition and applause; no formal council action or vote was associated with the award.
