County mosquito surveillance shows West Nile everywhere; health staff urge continued monitoring

LaPorte County reported 154,890 mosquitoes trapped and 2,346 test pools submitted to the state lab; West Nile-positive pools were detected statewide and staff said animal cases (horse) have appeared and will be followed as part of routine surveillance.
Administrator Amanda Lanters told the board that mosquito surveillance in the quarter yielded 154,890 mosquitoes and 2,346 pools tested at the state laboratory; LaPorte County and all counties statewide reported West Nile virus-positive pools.
Lanters explained the county has shifted from light traps to gravid traps to better capture females most likely to transmit arboviruses and that detection in animals (a horse case) prompts closer human-case surveillance. She noted that the presence of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) habitat is more common in nearby Michigan and that the county monitors animal cases as an early warning.
The environmental health division also reported heavy water lab sampling: 565 E. coli tests, 552 coliform tests, 211 nitrate and 187 arsenic samples after the property-transfer ordinance added arsenic screening; one arsenic test returned a positive result.
What the board did: The environmental health and administrator reports were accepted by voice vote.
