LaPorte County launches Heart Safe program, expands AED registry and CPR outreach

LaPorte County Administrator Amanda Lanters told the board that the county has launched a Heart Safe program to increase public access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and CPR training.
The initiative received a grant from the Health Care Foundation of LaPorte and is led locally by program coordinator Alicia Bishop, hired this summer. Lanters said one program priority is to catalogue and verify AED locations and operational status in the PulsePoint app so bystanders and 911 dispatchers can identify nearby devices.
Lanters said PulsePoint shows AED availability and location data and that the countyregistry grew from 430 to 595 AEDs after staff verification visits. She described the program as focused on training 15 percent of the county in CPR and on ensuring AEDs are maintained with working batteries and unexpired pads.
The department also plans to attend the Citizen CPR Foundation biannual conference in December to learn best practices from other communities running countywide programs.
