Volunteers praised for Garden Club Park weeding; resident offers pine-straw mulch pilot

Alicia thanked volunteers and said the group removed a larger-than-expected number of invasive plants and Chinese orchid bulbs. Board members recommended repeating work days at least twice a year — in spring and after summer — and adding better on-site signage to recruit park users.
At public comment, volunteer Nora Fosman described long-term practical experience using pine-straw mulch in community beds. "They really are very good source of mulch," Fosman said, adding that pine straw does not compress like bagged hardwood mulch and can help shade out invasive plants while avoiding soil nitrogen depletion associated with some wood mulches. Fosman offered to coordinate a small demonstration plot in Garden Club Park and to work with staff to source and place pine straw.
Staff and board members said they would coordinate the demonstration and thanked Fosman for volunteering to help. The board also noted the city would review mulch sourcing and trial different products to reduce the reintroduction of invasive material in bagged mulch.
What’s next: staff will coordinate with the volunteer to set up a demonstration area, monitor results and report back to the board on mulch performance and volunteer scheduling for spring and fall work days.
