Londonderry Middle School marquee deteriorated; facilities present two replacement options and cost estimates
Summary
Facilities staff told the board that one face of the LMS marquee no longer holds letters because of plastic rivet/track failures. Staff presented two options: repair/replace with a similar non‑digital marquee (~$12,500) or install a full LED digital display (~$27,000); board asked for additional bids and town coordination.

LONDONDERRY, N.H. — Facilities staff briefed the School Board on Nov. 4 about a failing marquee at Londonderry Middle School (LMS) and presented cost and design options for repair or replacement.
According to facilities staff, the marquee — installed in the mid‑1990s — has track and rivet failures on the side facing the high school; letters placed in the tracks fall out and plastic panels no longer secure properly. Staff said both interior faces still light, but one side will not hold the block letters used for messaging.
Two replacement options were presented: (1) a non‑digital replacement that uses block letters and maintains the current aesthetic (estimated cost about $12,500), and (2) a full LED digital board with a color display and remote updates (estimated cost about $27,000). Staff recommended gathering multiple bids and noted school districts are typically exempt from town lighting ordinances, though they would coordinate with town planning if the district selected a digital sign.
Board members suggested obtaining additional quotes ("Could we at least look at 3?" one member asked) and exploring fundraising through the LMS PTO or class gifts. Facilities staff said PTO fundraising would likely require a multiyear effort and that they would seek additional bids and revisit materials for the 2627 budget process.
No vote was taken. Administrators said they would return with more vendor estimates and options for funding.
