Committee approves forwarding revised directory information policy to board for first reading

A committee member asked who has access to directory information. Kelly explained that building administrators, certified staff, and building secretaries access PowerSchool (the district’s student information system) and that the directory policy refers only to basic contact information; academic records, assessment scores and other education records remain protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and require written parental consent before release.
The committee discussed whether parents could change their opt-out decision during the year. Kelly said parents or guardians may opt out at any time, and the district will honor changes made midyear. Members also asked about distribution practices for students who enroll midyear; Kelly said new families receive the same annual notice at enrollment.
Juanita moved and Michelle seconded a motion to recommend policy 5145.15 to the Board of Education for a first reading adopting the opt-out approach; the committee voted in favor and the motion carried.
