Palatka junior-varsity volleyball finishes 24-0; junior-high squad wins SMAC title, board recognizes teams

The Putnam County School Board recognized two Palatka Junior-Senior High School volleyball teams during its Nov. 4 meeting, honoring the junior-varsity squad’s 24–0 season and the junior high team’s SMAC conference championship.
Coach Shlugo, who identified herself as the JV coach, told the board, “We went 24. Yep.” She credited multi-year continuity, persistent drilling and the work of earlier coaches for the record. Assistant coach Walker said assisting the team was “a pleasure” and called the season his favorite year coaching, adding that the players communicated well and understood their roles.
The junior-high coaching staff — head coach Miley Woods with assistants Macy Woods and Jenna Buckles — told the board the younger team grew quickly: several players had never played before the season and helped the team capture the SMAC championship by coming back in multiple three-set matches. Several student players stepped forward and gave their names to the board during the recognition.
Board members applauded the teams. Members noted the success reflected not only athletic skill but school and family support, and several board members referenced the players’ coachable attitudes and teamwork.
The recognition was part of the board’s presentation segment; no board action or funding change was associated with the recognition.
