The Southborough Historical Commission voted unanimously on Nov. 5 to send a letter to the Massachusetts Cultural Council in support of the Southborough Historical Society's application for a capital grant to complete work at Fayetteville Hall.
Kevin Miller introduced the society's request and read a draft letter noting that the society has invested more than $2 million in the restored 1911 facility and that the History and Arts Center will host classes, exhibits and archives. Michael Wieson of the historical society explained the society is close to opening and needs funds for completion items including parking-lot work, final elevator requirements and finish elements that support ADA access.
Commissioners discussed that some façade and stair details are being evaluated with the town building commissioner and noted state-level waivers can be sought for certain code elements in historic buildings. Grant Farrington said he would like more information about any requested code waivers before the commission supported a waiver request, but commissioners agreed to approve the support letter for the MCC grant application.
The motion to approve the letter passed on a roll-call vote with all five members present voting in favor. Commissioners said they would remain available to the historical society and the new building inspector to provide preservation-minded support as the project seeks final approvals.
