District recommends asbestos abatement at Sale House and maintenance building; Sargent Enterprises bid recommended

Element Environmental’s required asbestos inspection identified asbestos‑containing materials (ACM) in the maintenance building and in the attic and floor tiles at Sale House (a district property used for student life‑skills instruction). Facilities staff recommended full removal of listed ACM items in Maintenance Building C and complete removal of floor tile and mastic in the Sale House attic and interior so the spaces no longer require monitoring.
The district received three quotes. Sargent Enterprises — which previously performed asbestos and mercury abatement work in the district — submitted the low responsive quote and is recommended for award at $15,753 including selected alternates (full tile and mastic removal at Sale House and removal of ACM pipe insulation repair at Maintenance Building B where appropriate). Element Environmental will provide oversight and air‑monitoring during abatement.
Administration emphasized there is no immediate risk to staff or students; the work is being done to comply with AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) inspection schedules and to remove damaged materials that could become a hazard later. If the board approves the award, the abatement will be scheduled during a period with minimal occupancy and with required containment and post‑clearance testing.
