Oak Ridge committees report trail work, Veterans Day ceremony and holiday events

Several town committees briefed the council Nov. 6 on volunteer-led trail work, park projects and upcoming community events.
Mountains-to-Sea Trail committee member Anne Steele said volunteers completed a bridge at Pemberley Carriage Cove and that VF Corp provided more than 20 volunteers for a workday. The committee reported beaver activity at the Headwaters well has caused flooding on a trail entrance; the committee has repeatedly cleared dams and is consulting Department of Agriculture experts on options. The MST noted a new parking lot at Scuba Tools is complete and called for community suggestions and a vote on names for recently completed Oak Ridge trails.
The Special Events committee announced the Veterans Day ceremony will be Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Honor Green with retired Lt. Col. Christian Castelli as guest speaker and performances by Oak Ridge Baptist Church Band and Oak Ridge Methodist Choir; scouts will participate. The committee also announced Light Up the Night on Saturday, Dec. 6, with 1,300 luminaries and a volunteer sign-up to place luminaries the weekend after Thanksgiving. The committee reported securing a donated piece of steel from the World Trade Center for a proposed small 9/11 memorial in 2026; the proposal will be reviewed with Parks & Rec advisory board.
Parks & Rec co-chair Adrian Ekenrod announced the farmhouse community center walkway work is in progress, rentals are now available on myrec.com, and a farmhouse open house will be held Sunday, Nov. 9 (2–4 p.m.) with author Sandra Smith present for book signings. The Tree Board reported planting a 15-foot white oak to maintain the town’s Tree City USA status and thanked council for preserving trees in the River Ridge Farm decision.
