Parent says gifted students denied transportation after unannounced route change

During public comment on Oct. 28, Veil Hill, a parent, told the Toledo City Schools Board that children enrolled in the district’s advanced academics (gifted) program have been denied transportation after an unannounced change to bus routes.
‘‘My daughter is enrolled in the advanced academics program, which is the gifted program...her route was changed without warning and the only solutions that I have been presented with as well as others is that we either have to figure it out or remove that from the program,’’ Hill said. She said the change affects multiple students and that last year a bus route had been restored within two days after she raised the issue.
Hill told the board that removing students from the program because of transportation would be ‘‘disheartening’’ and could cause academic regression or behavioral issues for affected students. She said she believes Toledo City Schools ‘‘cares about the education and success of all the students’’ but urged the district to prioritize keeping students in the program.
No board action or specific staff response to Hill’s comment is recorded in the meeting minutes. The public‑comment rules read earlier in the meeting state that board members will not engage in policy debate during public comment and that written follow‑up will be provided within a stated timeframe (noted as normally seven to ten days).
