At the Nov. 5 school committee meeting principals from multiple Barnstable schools presented 2025-26 school improvement plans that emphasized social-emotional learning (SEL), family engagement, and instructional initiatives.
School highlights and common themes - Barnstable United Elementary (BUE): Assistant Principal Justin described a house system and weekly SOAR-ticket recognition program designed to build a student-centered culture. Staff reinforced monthly core values and staffed weekly house meetings; the school plans to continue monthly assemblies and strengthen counseling ties to houses. BUE also plans a playground mat installation and field work noted in facilities planning.
- Barnstable Intermediate School (BIS): BIS reported attendance campaigns and a wide range of after-school activities. The school's student chorus and community showcases received particular praise. BIS also described an expanded MTSS and data-driven intervention process.
- Centerville and Barnstable West (BWB): Principals highlighted family curriculum nights, PBL and interest-pathway weeks (community volunteers ran pathway lessons), responsive-classroom practices and a focus on writing stamina. BWB reported early gains in CKLA and continued emphasis on targeted PLC work.
- Hyannis West and West Villages: Both schools described zones-of-regulation implementation, responsive-classroom training and district-aligned learning walks and coaching. West Villages noted a "community care" tree project and monthly attendance recognitions; Hyannis West described an expanded wind-block model to target small-group interventions.
Pre-K and EEC issues The Enoch Cobb Early Learning Center presented data on shifting enrollment and discussed planning for improvements in kindergarten readiness and the potential to explore a full-day model to better serve families and increase peer-model enrollment.
What principals asked of the committee Principals asked for continued support on facilities upkeep (fields, bathrooms, HVAC) and for district alignment of curriculum and professional development so that students transitioning across schools encounter shared language and expectations.
Why it matters Principals framed SEL and family engagement as foundational to academic success and described evidence of improved classroom problem-solving and community participation. Several principals said that early fidelity to programs such as CKLA and Responsive Classroom is already producing observable classroom-level gains.
Provenance: Presentations and Q&A appear in the agenda's school-improvement item beginning at roughly 01:00 in the transcript.
