Council voted to close segments of West Washington Avenue and Doyle Street for the Groves National Night Out event scheduled for Oct. 7, 2025. Marshall, who presented the item, said the event is being shifted to a block-party format on the streets to combine multiple community events and increase attendance. Presenters said the map of closures would be finalized this week and that the footprint is comparable to the park space normally used for prior events.
Marshall said staff had contacted all businesses and entities in the area, and that organizers planned to stop closures short of the driveway entrance to a nearby church so the congregation could access its parking. Market Basket and other sponsors were supportive and some sponsors are providing space for a DJ and staging. The city will position barricades, signage and staff/volunteers to monitor crossings; volunteers will be assigned to Gulf Street to assist pedestrian crossings.
Council confirmed Doyle Street had previously been approved for closure by the council and that staff will only block short of driveway entrances. The motion passed in a recorded vote with all members present voting aye.
