Franklin County proclaims shelter appreciation week for Prairie Paws

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 5 approved a proclamation recognizing Prairie Paws and designated a week in November 2025 to honor the shelter’s work.
The proclamation, read aloud by a county official, cites the shelter’s role in public safety and pet reunification and praised volunteers and donors who support veterinary care and enrichment programs. Prairie Paws’ representative told the board the organization now operates three locations and is projected to serve about 8,000 pets this year, with volunteers contributing roughly 10,000 hours. The representative said the shelter currently houses about 250 animals across the three sites with capacity up to 400 and expects kitten season impacts to subside in winter.
The representative said the shelter plans to acquire a mobile spay/neuter clinic in Columbus and hopes to launch it next spring to serve rural areas lacking affordable services. “We are a couple weeks away from me driving to Columbus and picking up our mobile spay neuter clinic,” the representative said.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval of the proclamation; recorded votes in favor were read aloud and the motion passed.
The proclamation and the discussion were ceremonial and did not create new county obligations or appropriations.
The board paused briefly for photos and remarks after the vote before moving on to regular business.
