Board approves one-step pay increase for custody tech at county jail

Kootenai County commissioners on Nov. 6 approved a one-step pay increase for a custody tech at the county jail after hearing that the employee had been hired as a patrol lateral, sustained an off-duty injury and worked roughly a year in light duty before being moved to the custody tech classification.
Captain Jeremy Heil described the case to the board, saying the employee had prior jail lateral experience and that the county's legal and human-resources offices had reviewed the pay-step request. "He was he's been working in this position for about a year in a light duty, capacity and, we recently with legal and HR, moved him to a custody tech position until he can heal enough to come back to a deputy position," Heil said. The county estimated the increase would cost about $1,500 for the fiscal year.
A motion to approve the step increase for the custody tech position was moved, seconded and approved by the commissioners. The transcript indicates HR and legal had cleared the request; the board recorded the motion as carried.
